Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal (ABGMVM)
The classic Hindustani board, with a graded ladder from Prarambhik up to Visharad and Alankar. Exams run twice a year (April/May and November/December) at ~800 centers worldwide, including affiliated overseas centers — and an International Online Exam Center for students with no center nearby (online theory + practical; theory is timed to IST, so expect odd hours abroad).

Prayag Sangit Samiti (Allahabad, est. 1926)
The oldest Indian music exam board, with graded exams from Prarambhik through doctoral levels in Hindustani music and dance. Online exams are available to students in the USA, UK, Canada, Germany and Australia, and the board states its certificates are recognized internationally — verify with your local requirements.

The diaspora-native alternative: fully online and video-submission based — students record (and re-record until satisfied) rather than sitting a fixed exam date. Carnatic Levels 1–7, Hindustani Levels 1–4. It’s IndianRaga’s own standard, not a government or legacy board — but for learners abroad, no travel and no fixed date is a real advantage.

Academy-internal grading
Several online academies run their own progressions: Artium’s Ofqual-accredited “Globally Recognised Music Programme”, Shankar Mahadevan Academy’s course levels, and Acharyanet’s Carnatic certificate course. Useful structure, but portable mainly within that academy.

Common mix-up: Trinity College London and ABRSM do not offer Indian classical graded syllabi, as far as we can tell. Use them for Western music only.

Trinity has a large India presence and has added Bollywood repertoire to keyboard syllabi (plus a past Carnatic pilot), but we found no confirmed standalone Hindustani/Carnatic grade path; and we found no Indian classical graded syllabus from ABRSM as of June 2026 — verify on the boards’ own sites before relying on it. Some NRI students use them in parallel — for Western music only.
