Four academies that each fit a different family situation, presented by need, so you can shortlist in an afternoon instead of losing three evenings to each platform’s booking page. We lead with Shankar Mahadevan Academy, the one our family actually uses, then list three alternatives alphabetically.
Pick by need: structured, level-by-level path for a kid → SMA. Internationally benchmarked certificate → Artium. Stage and performance time → IndianRaga. Lowest rate we observed ($12, on ipassio’s Carnatic listings), or choosing your own teacher → ipassio. Full reasoning: Where we’d start.
How we stay honest: The author’s family are paying students at Shankar Mahadevan Academy, one of the four we compare. We have no commercial relationship — no affiliate links, commissions or fees — with any platform here.
How we check platforms, and what we’d disclose if that changes
The site is free today; if that changes, we’ll say so on every affected page before you click, and it won’t change our picks. We lock our comparison criteria (see methodology) in writing before we look at any platform, apply the same written criteria to every platform, note wherever our checking was not symmetric across platforms, and keep the full field we considered visible.

Time zone check. Academies that teach the diaspora run overseas-friendly evening and weekend slots, with teachers working early-morning India hours. Marketplaces vary more, so confirm slots against your kid’s school schedule before enrolling — Artium and IndianRaga let you check this at a trial or paid demo; we could not find a published trial for SMA or ipassio, so ask directly.
What each academy actually costs, in the same units
A 12-week course at one academy and a 4-week block at another can’t be compared until they’re in the same unit: cost per lesson (each package’s total price divided by its number of lessons). On this page that ranges from $12 to $60, both at ipassio. Package prices below are as published in USD by each academy; the cost-per-lesson column is our own arithmetic (package price ÷ number of lessons), not a figure any academy publishes. Where a figure is our observation or inference rather than a published price, the row or footnote says so.
Before you compare rows: the SMA and Artium rows are Hindustani vocal courses only — other traditions are priced separately. Prices may differ by your region: Artium itself served USD on one page and INR on another for the same course, with no selector touched, so what you see may not match what we saw.
On Artium’s discount badges: we checked Artium’s page for promo badges and found them (5% on Intermediate, 10% on Proficient/Advanced); we did not run the same check on SMA, IndianRaga or ipassio, so their not having a promo note here is not evidence they had no promotion.
Not fully priced: SMA also lists HV103, HV104, HV100B–HV100D and its exam courses (HVESa, HVEMa) with no price checked here; our pricing pass covered Hindustani vocal only, not Carnatic, instruments or SMA’s other tracks.
More on scope: traditions, currency and what’s excluded
- IndianRaga showed the same prices across tracks when we checked, so its tiers aren’t Hindustani-specific.
- ipassio’s $12–$60 is from its Carnatic listings page (13 teacher listings); its Hindustani vocal page publishes no rates at all.
- Artium doesn’t publish a pre-discount list price, so we can’t state a non-promotional rate — that the badge is already reflected in the shown price is our arithmetic inference, not an Artium statement.
- Prices are as shown to a US-resolving visitor, no currency or region selector touched. Currencies aren’t interconvertible; don’t convert between them yourself.
Per-lesson cost isn’t a quality ranking and doesn’t account for lesson length on its own — weigh it against the Lesson length column. Format marks 1:1 vs group so you can compare within a format first. ? means we couldn’t verify that cell.

What the numbers mean
Where the two academies use comparable level names, Artium’s per-lesson cost is lower in each of the three pairings we could match: $25.00 vs $27.92 at Artium’s Preparatory / SMA’s entry tier (Artium ~10% lower), $28.50 vs $37.92 at Intermediate (~25% lower), $31.50 vs $42.08 at Artium’s Proficient/Advanced band vs SMA’s 300 series (~25% lower — but that Artium band is 96–120 classes, $3,024–$3,780, against SMA’s 12). These pairings are our judgement of which levels correspond; the two academies do not use a shared scheme, and a level name does not mean the same syllabus at both. The first pairing is not like-for-like at all: SMA’s entry tier is a shared seat of up to three students for 45 minutes, Artium’s Preparatory is private 1:1 for 60 minutes — though per minute of teaching Artium is cheaper still ($0.42 vs $0.62). SMA’s Hindustani vocal ladder runs to a fourth priced band above Advanced — the 400 series at $46.25/lesson. On the Artium Hindustani course page we checked, the highest level offered was Advanced; we did not review Artium’s full catalogue and make no claim about what it offers elsewhere. SMA publishes no level name for HV105–HV109; “mid-level” ($32.92) is our label, not SMA’s. Artium’s figures are promo-inclusive; we did not check SMA for discounts, so the diligence isn’t symmetric. Backing the badges out ourselves gives roughly $30.00 and $35.00 pre-discount, still below SMA’s $37.92 and $42.08 — but those two figures are our arithmetic, not prices Artium publishes. (Disclosure: our family are paying SMA students.)
A cheaper rate isn’t a cheaper decision — check the package size. Artium’s better rate comes with bigger commitments: Intermediate is 24 classes ($684); the top tiers are 96–120 classes ($3,024–$3,780). SMA sells one 12-week course at a time. ipassio has just a 2-class minimum. We did not check instalments, cancellation or refund terms — only package price and class count.
Performance opportunities
One of our eight criteria is performance opportunities: will your child get on a real stage — recitals, showcases, concerts — with a pathway to perform more seriously over time? We check whether the outlet is named and recurring, has a step-up pathway, and is reachable online rather than India-travel-only. Full definition on our methodology page.
How to read the marks: ✓ meets · ◐ partial · ✗ no · ? unverified (can’t confirm from public sources). This criterion is defined the same way for every platform; where our evidence for a platform is thinner, the mark says so. It is one criterion, not an overall rating. A vendor’s own marketing claim is attributed to the vendor, never shown as our own ✓.

We put Shankar Mahadevan Academy first because it’s the one our family pays for and learns through — the one we can speak to first-hand. This isn’t a ranking or a claim that SMA is the best of the four; its main trade-off is fixed 12-week terms rather than pay-per-class. Shankar Mahadevan Academy The one we use · structured progression for kids
SMA is the academy our family learns through, so we describe it from the inside. It runs live online Hindustani and Carnatic vocal, devotional and film songs, voice training (“Voice Gym”) and a children’s program, with partner in-person hubs in some cities. Overseas students are taught in English — our first-hand experience — so a child who doesn’t speak Hindi or Tamil can still follow along; confirm with your teacher.
A seven-level system (Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni) gives kids a visible path, with a level exam and certificate at each stage. Between classes there’s the OM Book (digital textbook, videos, games) and an OM riyaaz recorder for teacher-reviewed practice.
Scale, performance outlets and other claims (SMA’s own figures)
By SMA’s own account it has delivered 500,000+ online classes since 2011 across roughly 90 countries — not independently verified. Named, recurring performance outlets Milan 360™, Sangam™ and Prayag™ (eligibility varies by program; Prayag™ is a solo-concert platform for exceptional students, not open to everyone) give it a ✓ on our performance criterion, for range of outlets — IndianRaga is stronger on that one criterion. SMA also launched a practice-rewards program, Riyaz Rewards, in January 2026.
Format: small-group (up to 3) at beginner level, private 1:1 from mid-level through the Master series, term-based (12-week courses).
Best for: families who want structured, level-by-level progression, especially kids who do better with a visible path.

Listed alphabetically. Each fits a distinct family need — land on whichever matches yours rather than looking for a single winner.
Artium Academy For: brand-name faculty + an intl certificate
1:1 live lessons with structured levels and curricula from a named academic council (Sonu Nigam, K.S. Chithra, Aruna Sairam, Shubha Mudgal, Louiz Banks), plus a free 1:1 trial (registration required, no fee). Artium states that a specific named certification programme of its own aligns with Trinity/ABRSM standards (UK music exam boards) and is Ofqual-accredited (Ofqual is a UK qualifications regulator) — its own claim. Artium attaches this to that named programme, not necessarily to the Hindustani vocal packages priced above, and we did not verify it against Ofqual’s public register. Check which certificate your specific course leads to before enrolling.
Best for: families who value brand-name faculty and an internationally benchmarked certificate (per Artium) with a 1:1 curriculum.
Not for: classical depth on a budget — 1:1 costs more than group platforms; its course listings also include Bollywood/film content alongside classical, which may dilute focus for classical purists (our read of its own catalog, not a quality claim).

IndianRaga / Raga Labs Academy For: performance & recital opportunities
Live online mentorship in Carnatic and Hindustani vocal, instruments and percussion, performance-first (known for viral collaboration videos), built around stage- and video-ready pieces rather than ground-up beginner pedagogy. Courses come in a group tier and a private tier. Its separate IndianRaga Certification is fully online, video-submission based, English-medium, no travel or fixed exam date.
Best for: performance — we rate IndianRaga strongest of the four on our performance criterion, with a named diaspora stage pathway. That marquee fellowship stage is selective (the academy describes roughly a 5% acceptance rate for advanced artists), so treat it as a ceiling, not a guaranteed beginner recital. Often a strong companion alongside a structured academy.
Not for: families who need a legacy/government-recognized board or ground-up beginner hand-holding.

A marketplace of independent gurus (Carnatic and Hindustani vocal, sitar, sarod, tabla, violin, veena, flute and more), live 1:1, pay-per-session with a 2-class minimum. We could not confirm a free demo on any ipassio public page.
Best for: cost, flexibility and choosing your exact guru by style, language or gharana/bani (a teacher’s stylistic lineage), and instrument study.
Not for: families who want one unified curriculum and grading — there’s no single ladder, and because you pick your own teacher in an unstandardized marketplace, you’re responsible for vetting them yourself.

More academies we checked and cut — and why
- Darbar Academy: live online classes tied to the Darbar Festival, with a large concert-recording library. Reads as best once a child already has a foundation, not absolute-beginner-first. Unverified: beginner/kids-track depth, overseas-friendly hours.
- Ajivasan (Suresh Wadkar): a heritage Hindustani/Bollywood lineage (the Wadkar tradition). Unverified: diaspora onboarding, kids track, overseas-friendly hours — listed for the lineage, not because of a confirmed gap.
- Soul of Music: built around accountability — frequent group practice and learner showcases. Soul of Music says it runs high-frequency live sessions; that cadence is its own marketing claim, unverified by us.
- Acharyanet: per its own site (acharyanet.com; not independently verified): a Carnatic-only video library (600+ lessons, free one-week trial) plus live 1:1/small-group classes (~$25/session) and a certificate track. Works best as a supplement to a teacher, not a stand-alone academy.
- Spardha School of Music: publishes less about its curriculum and pricing than the four above (pricing shown only at checkout) — a track-record gap, not a quality judgement.
- Riyaz and Padhanisa: practice apps, not teaching academies — a different category, so they live on practice tools instead.
- Others surveyed for completeness (MusicPandit, Sounds of India, Chhayanot, Excellence Academy of Indian Music, Raaga School of Music): mostly single-teacher or niche, or thin on published facts; not independently verified. We don’t claim the field is exhaustive — only that the shortlist is defensible.
